For more than 20 years, we have been inviting groups of young artists and activists from countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to the KinderKulturKarawane in Germany every year. The groups present their artistic productions from the fields of dance, theater, music and circus in schools, youth and cultural centers and at festivals. They also give workshops in which they teach creative methods. The young artists present their talents in their performances and address personal experiences and problems that affect their everyday life. The productions are almost always thematically related to the sustainable development goals. In their projects, the young people gain new perspectives and self-confidence through their artistic work in order to shape their own future.
Since 2015, we have also been carrying out the CREACTIV für Klimagerechtigkeit “Climate Justice” with two groups every year, in which the groups with students each spend one week artistically dealing with the topics of climate change and climate justice. In addition, together with the Cologne Institut equalita we have been coordinating the NRW project Kreativ Global. since 2022. The topics SDG 5 and 13 will be artistically developed through workshops. We are also partners in the Erasmus+ project CULPEER digital.
You can find out how to invite one of these groups hier. The Children’s Cultural Caravan will take place with these groups in 2023. If you would like to propose a group for future children’s cultural caravans, you will find the conditions of participation here : Conditions & Application
Our goals
Experience of self-efficacy
The young people feel a sense of achievement and make the important experience that they themselves can make a positive difference.
Arts for social change
By changing one’s own viewpoint and personality, processes of transformation in society as a whole are supported.
Communication of global perspectives
Complex international contexts are made visible and tangible in a vivid way through artistic methods.
Support of the international partner projects
The social and cultural work of the international partners is financially supported. In addition, by participating in the KinderKulturKarawane the projects can establish new contacts and expand their network.
Our method:
Cultural Peer Learning
Peer learning means that learning content is taught by peers. In our workshops we combine this approach with the artistic methods of cultural education. The creative cooperation with peers from the Global South changes the way, how both sides think about global issues. It opens the view for challenges and the creativity of all participants to present new solutions on stage. Social skills are also strengthened and language and cultural barriers are overcome. This creative process strengthens self-confidence and promotes a feeling of self-efficacy.
Facts & Figures
Since the start of the KinderKulturKarawane, 953 young artists from over 60 different projects have presented theatre, traditional and modern dance, traditional and modern music, circus and interdisciplinary performances. The groups have staged more than 4,000 performances and workshops, reaching about 80,000 people every year. In total, the KinderKulturKarawane was thus able to transfer around 900,000 € to the partner projects in the Global South.
