PHSOM PRENG “The adventure”

A young Cambodian boy struggles with the violence in his family. In comparison with other families, living in a loving atmosphere, the relationship with his parents is, due to the very poor living standards they are facing, tensed. So the boy decides to leave his household in search for a better life.

In Cambodia, migration into cities is a growing problem. Thousands of young people from remote areas are leaving for Phnom Penh, the capital, each year, looking for jobs and a possibility to earn money. Instead of that most of them get exploited as waiters, cooks, car washers, scavengers and sex workers.

Szenenfoto aus "Das Abenteuer" von Phare Ponleu SelpakThe boy met some fellows, also migrants to Phnom Penh at the bus station. They hit and robbed him, so he soon gets a taste of the hostility in the city. Hopelessly the boy ended up on a dumpsite. Thanks to a band of smart street kids, he slowly regains hope and self-confidence and finally finds the strength to confront his parents.

After 12 years as a circus student of Phare Ponleu Selpak, and many tours in Europe and Japan since 2005, today Huoth Hieng is a teacher and stage director. In 2010 she codirected the show "School day" in cooperation with the French choreographer Sarosi Nay. In 2012 she directed her first play "Phsong Preng", being responsible for the script writing, staging, costumes, and the technical training of her 7 students.
